What is SEDI?

The Social Enterprise Development Initiative is an Australian Government program that helps social enterprises build the capability they need to grow and become sustainable. Rather than funding a single project, it invests in the enterprise itself, from strategy and systems to staff skills and impact measurement.

Because the program is competitive and selection happens in cohorts, a strong expression of interest is the first hurdle. Giving Tree Advisors has secured a $100,000 SEDI grant for a client and knows what the assessors are looking for.

Who it is for

SEDI is aimed at social enterprises that create employment or benefit for people experiencing disadvantage. Funders generally look for organisations that:

  • Trade to create social impact and reinvest profits
  • Support people experiencing disadvantage or exclusion
  • Have an established operation and financial statements
  • Can show how capability funding will lead to growth

What it funds and how much

Capability grants fund the enterprise's development. Common uses include:

  • Business and strategic planning
  • Systems, software and financial management
  • Staff training and specialist advice
  • Impact measurement and evaluation

How to write a competitive application

SEDI assesses both the enterprise and the plan. Here is what makes an application stand out.

1. Nail the expression of interest

The EOI decides whether you get to apply. Be clear, specific and honest about where the enterprise is at.

2. Show the growth pathway

Explain how each funded activity unlocks growth or sustainability, not just what you will buy.

3. Get your financials in order

Two years of financial statements are typically required. Have them ready and consistent with your application.

4. Be realistic about capacity

Assessors look for enterprises that can actually deliver the plan.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the EOI as a formality
  • Listing activities without linking them to growth
  • Financial statements that do not match the application
  • Missing the cohort cut-off dates

Common questions

SEDI FAQ

Do we need to be a registered charity?

No. SEDI is for social enterprises, which may be charities, not-for-profits or companies with a clear social purpose.

How many enterprises are funded?

Only a portion of applicants in each cohort. It is competitive, which is why the EOI and the plan need to be strong.

Can Giving Tree Advisors write the application for us?

Yes. We check eligibility, shape the project and budget, and write the whole application, so your team can stay focused on the work.
